Makaʻala Moment #11

When I mentioned Abby’s, Linnea’s, and Kelsi’s relative state’s of undress last week I didn’t mean to infer that they were criminals, I was just pointing out that anyone can act bad from time to time. (6)

1.  With two or more possessive nouns modifying the same noun, only use the “’s” with the last one.

2.  The possessive “state’s” should be the plural “states.”

3.  We need a comma after the introductory adverb clause.

4.  “infer” should be “imply,” meaning “hint.”

5.  We connect two independent clauses with a comma and coordinate conjunction or a semi-colon.

6.  The adjective “bad” should be the adverb “badly.”

A corrected version might read

When I mentioned Abby, Linnea, and Kelsi’s relative states of undress last week, I didn’t mean to imply that they were criminals; I was just pointing out that anyone can act badly from time to time.

Makaʻala Moment #10

Having seen her share of inappropriate halloween costumes over the years it was apparent Mrs. Martin had to reluctantly make the following rules; no crack-heads, no satanists, and she won’t allow the exposure of any naughty bits whatsoever. (8)

1. We need a comma after the introductory participle phrase.

2. “halloween” is a proper noun and needs to be capitalized.

3. “it” is a vague pronoun.

4. The misplaced participle phrase needs to be closer to “Mrs. Martin.”

5. If at all possible, we should avoid splitting the infinitive.

6. Preceding a list, we use a colon.

7. “satanists” is a proper noun and needs to be capitalized.

8. The list has a parallel structure problem; we need to reduce the last clause to a noun.

Having seen her share of inappropriate Halloween costumes over the years, Mrs. Martin reluctantly had to make the following rules: no crack-heads, no Satanists, and no revealing outfits.
