PD Tuesday: Show Me the Money

So you’re thinking of going back to school, taking a class, earning a degree, but finances are holding you back? Just remember you’re not on this journey alone. Here are some links and deadlines to help you finance your education.

Start here: FAFSA– free application for federal student aid. If you are filling it out before you do your taxes, use last year’s taxes as a base. Even if you don’t qualify for anything, scholarships want to see your FAFSA.

For Native Hawaiian educators:

Check out He Ipu Kāʻeo: Resources for College Students booklet put out by OHA

ʻImi Naʻauao merit-based scholarship – deadline March 8

Ke Ali’i Pauahi Foundation – deadline March 22 – applications open up February 6. Download their scholarship guide. It’s a lot of work, but the possible rewards are worth it.

Nā Hoʻokama a Pauahi – needs-based financial aid – deadline April 22

Liko A’e Native Hawaiian Scholarship Program – applications open March 4, deadline May 1

For everyone:

STAR – University of Hawaii scholarships (any campus) – deadline February 17

Hawaii Community Foundations scholarships – deadline February 22

UH System Scholarship bank – deadline March 1

If you know of any more resources, let me know and I will share it out.

PD Tuesday: Present at Soft Tofu

Teachers learn best when they learn from other practitioners. Teachers teaching teachers is a powerful tool for improving student learning.

What: Call for proposals for Soft Tofu (Schools of the Future) – sorry, inside joke, but the site is, so doesn’t it look like soft tofu? – due February 1, 2013 for the October 17-18, 2013 conference in Honolulu.

Proposals can be on the following:

  • assessments
  • curriculum and instruction
  • digital media
  • online learning
  • projects-based/design-thinking learning
  • technology integration in the classroom

  • Teachers are the best presenters of their own teaching and learning.
  • For proposals that are accepted, the first presenter on the team gets their registration fee waived (about a $200 savings).
  • This is a local conference that could use local practitioners – because despite negative press, our local teachers are doing great things in their classrooms.

If you/your team needs help writing up your proposal, e-mail me or call x20464.

Happy New Year’s – from Hilo, one of the last legal fireworks-popping places in Hawaii. Good health, good friends, good food.
